Country Report for Finland
General information about the national YG network
Finnish Nuclear Society Young Generation is a vibrant
group of young nuclear professionals operating under the scientific
organisation of Finnish Nuclear Society. Every person under 35 receiving
the membership of Finnish Nuclear Society (FNS) by an application to
the Board of FNS is automatically accepted as a member of FNS Young
Generation. Currently FNS Young Generation has approximately 170 members
from over 10 different organisations.
The main purposes of FNS Young Generation are following:
-
To organize activities to young nuclear professionals
and other FNS members to promote learning, networking and community
spirit. One form of the activities arranged by FNS YG is a bi-annual
seminar aiming at knowledge transfer and broadening the perspective
of the young professionals. FNS YG also arranges an annual excursion
to promote participation of young professionals. The most recent
excursions have been to Sweden in 2002 (OKG's Oskarshamn NPP and
SKB's Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory), Russia in 2003 (Kola
NPP and nearby sites with nuclear interest), United Kingdom in 2004
(Sellafield), European YG Forum 2005 (Croatia) and IYNC2006 (Sweden)
and Ukraine in 2007.
-
To promote nuclear engineering as a choice of
tertiary education among undergraduate students. The alumni of the
Technical Universities from Helsinki, Lappeenranta and Tampere working
for different nuclear employers visit once a year at the University
to present their line of work and motivate the first and second
year students to study nuclear engineering. These occasions are
quite informal and are sponsored by FNS or nuclear power companies.
-
To take an active role in the discussion of the
future of the nuclear power and presenting the views of the young
scientists to the nuclear community in Finland and to the public.
Representatives of the press are usually invited to the Young Generation
bi-annual seminars, and press releases are sent out after the seminars.
FNS YG also participates in Helsinki Energy Fair held every second
year promoting nuclear as an option for sustainable energy production
form and as a good working opportunity for young professionals.
-
To participate in the work of international nuclear community mainly
through ENS YG Network and IYNC.
FNS Young Generation Core is responsible for planning
and executing Young Generation activities. Every organisation having
a member or members in the Finnish Nuclear Society has a possibility
to appoint a representative to the FNS YG Core. Currently FNS YG Core
has a representative from 8 nuclear organisations. FNS YG Core is headed
by the Chair of FNS YG, who also acts as an official in FNS Board participating
in the FNS Board meetings. FNS YG Core has 3-5 meetings in a year.
