The Jan Runermark Award

Winner of the 2001 award

Prof. Danilo Feretic Ph.D., Croatia

Prof. Danilo Feretic is a professor at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, covering a wide area of nuclear-related subjects: nuclear power plants, theory of nuclear reactors, thermal processes in nuclear reactors, etc. He has been working in the field of nuclear engineering and nuclear reactors theory for many years, since 1956.
Prof. Feretic was the head of the group for the development of nuclear equipment in industry, head of the group for the preparation of the Krško NPP (Slovenia) construction, and a technical director of the Krško NPP construction. He was also dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing for two terms of office. Now Prof. Feretic is the head of the group for the nuclear power plants' safety analysis at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb, Croatia. Prof. Feretic is a president of Krško NPP Safety Committee - advisory group to the Krško NPP director for the NPP safety issues. He is also author and co-author of many articles, publications and books (more than 100), most of these represent the main source of knowledge for nuclear technology students.
He has worked as the expert in the Institute for Nuclear Sciences in Egypt and also as the associate expert to numerous councils and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expert groups in many countries.

Prof. Feretic was president of the Croatian Nuclear Society (HND) for two terms. Both as a professor and as a president, he put a lot of personal effort into including young people, his students especially, in the work of HND. He is also the founder and mentor of the Croatian Young Generation Network, and he played and is still playing a key role in its organisation.

Despite the financial difficulties in HND, Prof. Feretic always tried to find some other means and resources to support the work of the Croatian YGN.
Prof. Feretic is an expert who is always willing to help and answer all the questions that young people can have related to nuclear issues. He tries to include young people in all HND’s activities and he plays an important role in the organisation of the Croatian YNG activities, helping in the organisation of different seminars, workshops and platforms.
Most of the Croatian YGN members' visits to different institutions and their participation in some meetings were possible, thanks to Prof. Feretic .

Prof. Feretic is a rare person possessing great expert knowledge in the nuclear field and the ability to pass that knowledge on to the next generation, in an easy-to-follow and patient manner. He is never tired and always willing to help when it comes to the young generation, so we consider him as our mentor and tutor and we consider ourselves to be a privileged generation as we have the opportunity to know him and are able to work with him.

We can only wish that there are and pray that there will be more people like Prof. Feretic.
