The Jan Runermark Award

Winner of the 2004 award

Michael Grave, United Kingdom

Michael Grave was presented with the Jan Runermark award at the ENS General Assembly in Vienna, 25 June 2004.

Mr. Grave is a native of Halifax, England and a Chartered Chemical Engineer, having graduated at the University of Leeds in 1969. He is Decommissioning & Waste Management Manager for Mitsui Babcock Energy Ltd, Nuclear & Decommissioning Services based in Gateshead. The company is an established leader in the provision of unique energy and environmental solutions to clients worldwide. Prior to this his career spanned ICI Agricultural Division, Clarke Chapman Ltd, Northern Engineering Industries and Rolls-Royce mostly in contractor activities in support of new nuclear build and decommissioning.

He has worked in the Radioactive Waste Management field since 1982 with a range of technical and commercial management responsibilities covering fields such as repository design, decommissioning and waste management services and the introduction of mobile solidification services to the UK in beginning at Oldbury Power Station in 1986. He is a founder member and
Chairman of the British Nuclear Energy Society, Special Interest Group on Waste Management and Decommissioning and an Executive and Board of Trustee member. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a lead interviewer for corporate membership candidates. In 2004 he has been acting as an advisor on decommissioning to the training department of Ignalina NPP in Lithuania.

Mr. Grave has provided support and advice to the YGN, its Chair and committee which far exceed the call of duty. He has helped YGN to build its profile, actively seeking ways to involve YGN in joint events. For example, he gained the support of key local personnel to assist YGN in the inauguration of the Dounreay branch. A keen supporter of YGN membership of the SIG committee, he was instrumental in the organisation of the British Nuclear Energy Society YGN and SIG seminar at Dounreay, taking personal time to prepare and assist. Furthermore, he took the lead in chairing and advising on YGN issues during the seminar. He is committed to encouraging young people to join the YGN whilst also endeavouring to maximise its visibility.
