ENS YGN

Country Report for United Kingdom

activities

General information about the national YG network

The BNES YGN works to its business plan, which is based on the EFQM format. The plan has eight strategic areas that the YGN’s performance is measured against:

  • Input to National Debates / Consultations

  • Building UK Links

  • Cultivate Links with Universities

  • Maintaining International Links

  • Maintain and build links with BNES

  • Increase Active YGN membership

  • Sustain an active committee

  • Maintain YGN momentum.

The YGN actively develops links with BNES branches and committees, as well as international and non-BNES committees. This currently includes the BNES Education and Training Committee, local branches, NAILS, CoRWM, ENS and IYNC.

The YGN recognises communication as key to promotion of the nuclear industry and transfer of knowledge. At present the following methods are in use:

  • Dedicated website which is well structured, contains latest news and reports on events;

  • YGN Stand for use at conferences, events and seminars as well as at the different the company offices of our committee; and

  • Use of internal company communications (e.g. intranets and distribution lists).

Email is a major form of communication used by the BNES YGN. The distribution lists contain approximately 460 live addresses, with 90% believed to be YGN. Others are ‘older’ BNES members and people who have expressed an interest in receiving our information. The latter category are invited to join, but not excluded if they do not!

Our training events are one of our key methods of transferring knowledge. The YGN have two annual events, the Rough Guide held at Sellafield and the Reactor Seminar held at Harwell. Our Rough Guide event was fully booked after a few weeks and will be held immediately prior to the ENS Core Committee meeting. Our new ENS Rep, Neil Crewdson, is taking a lead in organising this.

The YGN hosts and contributes to many other activities including Speaker Competitions, evening seminars, joint events with local branches and have held specialist seminars on topics such as Waste Management.

The YGN is now consulted within its own right on government consultation and UK nuclear issues, and contributes to BNES submissions.

To encourage involvement we run competitions offering entry to events or trips to seminars etc. Although we support financially, the winners must prepare a report to enable feedback and future learning points.

Further information on any of these activities can be provided on request.
