Core meltdown retention basin
scroll
Construction in a reactor to collect and cool the molten
reactor core. The reactor pit is designed to collect the liquid molten
metal mass generated during a core meltdown accident and guided by gravity
to a lower-level area made of refractory material over which the molten
mass spreads and the energy contained in it can be removed by cooling
and the molten mass solidifies.
