Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres

The "Hermann von Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren" (HGF) is the umbrella organization of 15 German large-scale research centres. As a scientific organisation, the HGF promotes the exchange of experience and information between its members as well as the co-ordination of research and development work, assumes tasks of common concern and represents the interests of the HGF to the outside world. The Helmholtz centres are engaged in research and development in natural science, technology and biological medicine. They contribute considerably to the state-subsidized programmes in the field of energy research and energy engineering, fundamental physical research, transport and traffic systems, aviation and space travel research, marine technology and geosciences, environmental protection and health, biology and medicine as well as polar research. The Helmholtz centres receive 90 percent of their funds from the Federal Government and 10 percent from the respective host Federal State. The centres have a total budget of about Euro 2 billion at their disposal. About 26,500 persons are employed in the 15 centres. These are:
