Process during which the kinetic energy of the neutrons is reduced by impacts without perceptible absorption losses. The energy-rich neutrons generated in nuclear fission with energies around 1 MeV are reduced to lower energies in the energy range of thermal neutrons (0.025 eV), since they probably initiate new fissions in this energy range.
