Elementary particle with a positive electrical elementary charge and a mass of 1.67262158 · 10-24 g, which is equal to about 1836 times the electron mass. Protons and neutrons together form the atomic nucleus. The number of protons in the atomic nucleus is determined by the chemical element allocated to this atom. (See 'elementary particle').
