ENS Yearbook 2002 Preliminary ENC 2002 Update
On the cover: BNFL’s new interactive exhibition in the UK
– sparking reaction – is energizing the debate about
nuclear power. The exhibition opened at the company’s Sellafield
plant in June and uses state-of-the-art digital technology to
transport visitors into a ‘virtual world’ where they
can make decisions on energy policy – and see the impact
of their choices! BNFL has given the London Science Museum editorial
control of the exhibition to underline its commitment to provoking
a balanced and independent debate about nuclear power and electricity
generation.
Wherever you are in the world, you too can experience
sparking reaction via a special interactive Web site (www.sparkingreaction.info)
due to be launched in July. |

ENC 2002 Preliminary Programme + Britain
On the cover: An artist’s impression of
the Westinghouse AP1000 advanced passive reactor. In February
2002, BNFL and British Energy signed a one-year agreement to assess
the feasibility of the AP1000 design as a potential replacement
for the UK's existing nuclear plants. This agreement follows the
recent publication of three influential reports into energy policy,
which all recognised the importance of retaining the nuclear option.

November-December 2000
Japan:
an astonishing nation with a unique historical background and
a remarkable success story in nuclear energy.
Experts from Europe and Japan share their views
and latest experiences. Others demonstrate how East and West work
together, stimulating new solutions. Of course, painful incidents
like the one at JCO-Tokai will not fade away: the question is
what lessons can be learned. A statement from a nuclear insider-outsider
on public acceptance rounds off NEW's November-December 2000 edition.

September-October 2000
European R&D
A constant and high-quality R&D program is essential for
any technological progress – not only but particularly in
nuclear.
NEW’s September-October issue pays tribute
to that fact. The issue approaches the subject from different
ways: touching upon the financial conditions, encouraging supra-national
cooperation, presenting some of the latest top results –
and last but not least views of how nuclear research will continue
in Europe.
