In February 2010, 436 nuclear power plants were in operation and 55 under construction world-wide. Most of the nuclear power plants were equipped with light water reactors.

Mainly pressurized water reactors (PWR) are used in the nuclear power plants world-wide – 61 % according to the number, 65% according to the output - followed by boiling water reactors (BWR) – 23 % according to the number, 23 % according to the output.

As of February 2010 in 30 countries 436 nuclear power plant units with an installed electric net capacity of about 370 GW are in operation and 56 plants with an installed capacity of 52 GW are in 15 countries under construction.
