EDF Announces Additional Life Extensions for Two UK Nuclear Power Plants
EDF (ENS Corporate Member) has confirmed further life extensions for two of its UK nuclear power stations – Heysham 1 (two units) in Lancashire and Hartlepool (two units) in Teesside, which will continue generating until March 2028, an extension of 12 months.
The decision was taken following a series of positive graphite inspections at both stations over the past nine months.
This extension secures more than 1,000 high-quality local jobs in the Lancashire and Teesside areas for longer, also helping support UK energy security and reducing the use of imported gas.
The announcement follows the one-year extension to 2027 confirmed in December 2024. Positive progress in these areas has supported the decision to extend the lifetime by an additional 12 months.
In 2024, also Heysham-2 (Lancashire) and Torness (East Lothian) received a two-year extension, to keep producing zero-carbon electricity to March 2030.
