Research reactor of the Hahn-Meitner-Institut, Berlin. BER II is a pool reactor with a thermal output of 15 MW, commissioned on 9th Dec. 1973. After 40 years of successful neutron research in Berlin-Wannsee, the research reactor BER II was finally shut down at the end of 2019. The shutdown was decided by the HZB Supervisory Board in summer 2013. HZB’s dismantling team will spend the next few years developing the exact plans for the dismantling in every detail. Great importance must be given to the reactor pool and its technical components. The plan is for BER II to be fully dismantled by the end of the 2020s.
