Olkiluoto Hit New Production Record In 2023

In 2023, the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant produced a total of 24.67 TWh of low-carbon electricity, representing 31 % of the electricity consumed in Finland. TVO (Teollisuuden Voima Oy, ENS Corporate Member) declared that this is the highest production volume ever in the history of the site.

The year 2023 was a historically great year for Olkiluoto. All three plant units of Olkiluoto are now in operation with a combined power output of about 3380 MW

says Marjo Mustonen, TVO Senior Vice President, Electricity Production.

Of course, the new record is due largely to the fact that the additional reactor unit Olkiluoto-3 is now regularly operating.

OL-3 already produced 10.37 TWh of electricity to the national grid last year. That is almost half of the whole production volume at the Olkiluoto site. The unit has been in production for 6155 hours, with only two minor production disruptions, only accounting for 1.4% of the total operating time.

The production year was a solid one also for the Olkiluoto-1 and -2 plant units. OL-1 produced 7.42 TWh of electricity, slightly more electricity than in previous years, while OL-2 production was 6.87 TWh, reduced by being out of operation for 17 days last August.

As announced last year, an ongoing investigation is looking into extending the operating licences for the OL-1 and OL-2 plant units and a potential power increase. The Environmental Impact Assessment process launched in the autumn of 2023 is expected to go on for months. Both units are licensed until 2038.
