Russian Research Institutes Support Fukushima Decommissioning

Russia’s Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR), in close cooperation with VG Khlopin Radium Institute (St Petersburg), Production Association Mayak and Techsnabexport (all parts of Rosatom) completed two projects related to the justification of the safe decommissioning of the Fukushima-Daiichi NPP.

The research results were highly appreciated by Japanese customers and were accepted in full.

The first project concerned the development of a predictive model of the behaviour of fuel-containing materials at the Fukushima-Daiichi NPP under the influence of degrading factors.

The second project was aimed at experimental cutting of representative samples of used nuclear fuel and model samples of nuclear fuel debris from the Fukushima-Daiichi NPP in order to assess the properties of the dust and confirm the effectiveness of the laboratory system for collecting it.
