As Europe advances towards its decarbonisation objectives, ensuring a secure, affordable and reliable electricity supply remains crucial. Long-Term Operation (LTO) of existing nuclear power plants is increasingly recognised as a key element in addressing this challenge, enabling low-carbon generation to continue while supporting system stability, energy sovereignty and economic competitiveness.

In this new Position Paper, the ENS High Scientific Council examines the role of LTO in Europe’s energy transition, placing it within the broader context of energy security, policy choices and societal impacts, highlighting both the opportunities and the consequences of inaction.
