GRE@T-PIONEeR is glad to announce a new course ready to start in December: “Core modelling for transients”

  • From 12th December 2025 to 16th January 2026 – Online & in Gothenburg (Hybrid format)

The course deals with the modelling of nuclear reactors in transient conditions, focusing on the modelling of neutron transport, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, fuel thermo-mechanics, and their interdependencies. The principles of deterministic methods in non-steady-state conditions, their approximations, and their range of validity for core calculations are presented. Likewise, the macroscopic modelling methods of nuclear thermal-hydraulics and fuel thermo-mechanics are addressed. Finally, due to the interdependencies between the various physics, numerical techniques used for multi-physics coupling are detailed.

The pedagogical format of the course is based on a hybrid flipped classroom.

The target audience for the course is:

MSc students, PhD students and Post-Doc students having some background knowledge in nuclear engineering.
Nuclear engineers.
Reactor physicists.
Nuclear safety analysts.
Research scientists in the above fields.

Registrations close on 2Nnd November 2025.

GRE@T-PIONEeR is a project which developed specialised education and training resources for post-graduate students in reactor physics and safety.

The aim was to create an alliance aimed at teaching advanced and specialised reactor physics and nuclear reactor safety while making use of synergies between the different consortium members.

The project offers materials which allow students to fully comprehend topics related to the physics, modelling and safety of nuclear reactors, with an emphasis on nuclear cores. By following the courses and hands-on training sessions, the students are able to perform nuclear reactor safety simulations and understand all the calculations behind these simulations.
