ENS Webinar – Exploring LTO in Europe | Perspectives on Extending Nuclear Lifetimes to 80 Years
Exploring LTO in Europe
Perspectives on Extending Nuclear Lifetimes to 80 Years
Across Europe, discussions are underway on the potential of extending the operational lifetime of nuclear power plants from 60 to 80 years. Following the U.S. experience, operators in several European countries have started exploring what such an extension could mean for their fleets, their energy systems, and Europe’s overall decarbonisation goals.
- What are the drivers and motivations for exploring this path? And what technical, regulatory, and strategic aspects typically need to be considered?
The webinar, recorded on 26th November 2025, offers an introductory, two-level overview — first, a global perspective on the needs and requirements of long-term operation beyond 60 years, and then a European case study focusing on the Netherlands and EPZ (ENS Corporate Member) exploration of extending the Borssele NPP lifetime.
Speakers:
- Dr. Robert Křivánek (Research and Development Manager | ÚJV Řež, a. s.)
- Andreas J. Van Wijk (Senior Project Manager LTO | EPZ)
Moderator:
- Dr. Ondrej Novak (Czech Technical University in Prague | Chair of the Czech YGN)
