Tractebel to Investigate the Role of Advanced Nuclear Technology in Industrial Decarbonisation
On Monday 28 September, a Belgian consortium led by Tractebel (ENS Corporate Member) announced the launch of NuPowerBE, a research project to assess the role of advanced nuclear technology, including SMRs, in the continued decarbonisation of Belgian industry and the wider energy system.
NuPowerBE will explore a wide range of topics, including opportunities for industrial integration, impacts on the Belgian energy system, socio-economic effects, financing approaches, and a regulatory framework.
The consortium consists of 11 other partners, consisting of experts from universities, stakeholders, and the legal, financial, and industry sectors. Each partner is tasked with a specific element of the research, while Tractebel assumes technical coordination of the program and supports integration across partners.
The partnership’s diverse voices ensure multiple perspectives are analysed and documented, strengthening the quality of the research.
Through a rigorous, multidisciplinary and evidence-based approach, our ambition is to provide valuable insights that can support informed decision-making for Belgium’s energy future.
said Eleonora Lambridis, Project Director at Tractebel.
The project will be funded by the Belgian Energy Transition Fund, managed by the FPS Economy, and is expected to run until 2029.
