The radiation exposure of the human being due to the discharge of radioactive substances into the air or water during the operation of nuclear facilities and while handling radioactive substances is governed by the Radiological Protection Ordinance by means of strictly limiting values. The Section of the Radiological Protection Ordinance governing the protection of the population specifies the following dose limit values resulting from radioactive substance disposal in air or water:

effective dose 0.3 mSv/year,
gonads, uterus, red bone marrow 0.3 mSv/year,
all other organs 0.9 mSv/year,
bone surface, skin 1.8 mSv/year.

This radiation protection concept is named after the former dose unit millirem – 0.3 mSv is equal to 30 millirem.
